Definition A device or software application that monitors network or system activities for malicious activities or policy violations and produces reports to a management station. Used in computer networks in conjunction with a firewall, provides around-the-clock network surveillance by analysing data streams within the network, searching for unusual or unauthorized activity, such as attacks by hackers.
At the United Nations, in 2013 an "intrusion detection service" was to be established and initially limited to:
- the primary data centre and the secondary data centre for UNHQ;
- the enterprise data centres in United Nations Support Base in Valencia and the United Nations Logistics Base.
Subsequently was to cover offices away from Headquarters and regional commissions.

wireless intrusion detection system (WIDS) monitors the radio spectrum for the presence of unauthorized, rogue access points and the use of wireless attack tools. The system monitors the radio spectrum used by wireless LANs, and immediately alerts a systems administrator whenever a rogue access point is detected.
